Refurbishing a device can mean lower overall CO2 emissions as there’s no need for a brand new device from the manufacturer. It can also reduce e-waste by avoiding the need to dispose of a device that could have a good and useful second life.

We can help you estimate the potential for positive environmental outcomes from refurbishing devices instead of disposing of them after the first cycle.
 
The calculator below is for illustrative purposes only. It is based on a methodology developed by an external consultancy with specialist expertise in CO2 emissions modelling and analysis. The e-waste avoidance calculation uses public data on WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) volumes based on the weight of each product group. Methodologies may vary depending on the manufacturers and over time.

 

The data generated by the calculator is an approximation only. This calculation assumes that all devices are refurbished for reuse. It considers the estimated GHG footprint of manufacturing a new device purchased by a company in order to replace the one being disposed of at the end of the lease period under the assumption that the device is not refurbished for reuse. This calculation does not consider the net impact of the new device or the estimated GHG emissions caused during the use phase or throughout the remarketing process, such as transportation, refurbishing via our centres or via certified brokers and recycling.

 

Please note that our GHG footprints are mostly derived from the IT devices we refurbish, which are not included here.

 

As they are logically older than brand new devices, the GHG footprint of their manufacturing process could thus be larger than that of current devices. This may lead to a bias of estimating larger GHG reductions from refurbishing and second life compared to disposing outright and buying brand new devices.

 

We’re currently working on a new, updated calculator with more granularity.

Users should be aware that the current one will be soon decommissioned – we expect the updated version to be available in late 2023.

*The source data for these calculations comes from 3stepIT's refurbishing centres, where over 530 000 devices were processed in 2020. We calculate CO2 avoidance by measuring the median CO2 emissions per product group. We base this on manufacturer data for the most popular devices we process within each product group. The e-waste avoidance calculation is based on the weight of each product group. We use the median weight of the most popular models we process in each group.
